The Granholm Record of Achievement
A RECORD OF SECURING MICHIGAN'S FUTURE
Governor Granholm's Administration is focused on securing Michigan's future for all of our families. Her priorities - improving education, reducing the costs of health care, protecting families and growing the economy - are reflected in the accomplishments of her Administration and in the state's budget.
Fighting for Every Job: Governor Granholm will go anywhere and do anything to bring jobs, and keep jobs, for Michigan. Direct action by her Administration has already created and retained 230,000 jobs. Seven corporations recently established new headquarters in Michigan and 2,400 new small businesses opened their doors in our cities. Granholm is committed to helping businesses in Michigan thrive. She pushed for and signed legislation to win a new Toyota R&D facility that will put 677 people to work. Granholm has also created fund to attract and retain entrepreneurs and reduced red tape for businesses seeking permits to open or expand.
Ensuring the Promise of Educational Opportunity: At every level, Governor Granholm has championed education, a top priority for her Administration. On early education, she created a revolutionary childhood literacy program, Project Great Start. Under the Governor's 2006 budget, funding for Michigan's K-12 classrooms will increase to record levels, despite a billion dollar budget shortfall. And Granholm's New Merit Scholarship would award college achievement by giving a $4,000 award to every student that completes two years of post-secondary education, making Michigan the first state in the nation to extend the opportunity of higher education to all.
Extending Affordable Health Care to Michigan Citizens: Governor Granholm has saved citizens and the state money on health care while extending care and affordable prescription drug coverage to thousands. She established a first-in-the-nation bulk purchasing "pool" for prescription drugs, saving the state millions of dollars in health care costs and extending affordable prescription drug benefits to 25,000 citizens through the MIRX card. Despite a budget crisis, Granholm was able to restore coverage to 40,000 citizens that were cut off health insurance, ensure health care for those most in need in Southeast Michigan through a $50 million investment in the Detroit Medical Center and extend physician services and pharmacy coverage to 50,000 addition low-income adults throughout the state.
Shrinking the Size of Government, Protecting the People's Priorities: Securing the future - and growing the economy - starts with putting the state's financial house in order. Governor Granholm has gotten rid of $4 billion in left-behind deficits by making tough choices and by cutting waste, fraud and abuse. The Granholm Administration is doing more with less and protecting citizens' critical priorities without raising taxes. Under Granholm, the state bureaucracy is smaller and taxpayers' dollars are being spent more efficiently than ever before. The result: education spending is up, more citizens have health care and thousands of seniors have access to cheaper prescription drugs - all without raising general taxes. That's why Michigan was called the third best-managed state in the nation by Governing magazine, which gave the Administration high marks for fiscal responsibility.
