With just over six months to go until the November elections and 37 days until the recall election in Wisconsin, I wanted to update you on where we stand.

The DGA is defending eight Democratic governorships this year, while the RGA only has four governorships to defend. It’s a challenging map, but we are confident about our chances thanks to strong candidates. In 2011, the DGA was able to hold governorships in Kentucky and West Virginia despite being outspent 3-to-1 in the latter state. That’s the same successful playbook we’ll bring to 2012.

Here’s a rundown of our races:

Wisconsin (June recall election): Embattled Republican Governor Scott Walker is in a fight for his life in the Badger State. Walker won election in 2010 by promising to focus on jobs, but while Walker launched a politically-motivated attack against workers, Wisconsin slipped to last in the country in job creation. The latest poll has the race as a dead heat, with Walker losing to the leading Democratic challenger 47-46 among likely voters.

Delaware: Former DGA Chair Governor Jack Markell is one of the most popular governors in the country. Markell will face Republican Jeff Cragg in the general election. Democrats have held the governor’s office in Delaware since 1993.

Indiana: Tea Party favorite Rep. Mike Pence is running to replace Republican Governor Mitch Daniels. Pence’s far-right extremism provides a pickup opportunity for Democrats, who landed former House Speaker John Gregg as their candidate. Gregg’s plainspoken manner and moderate profile may be just what the DGA needs to score an upset in the Hoosier State.

Missouri: Democratic Governor Jay Nixon has earned a job approval rating of 60% in a state that is not always friendly to Democrats. Nixon’s popularity stems from his record of creating jobs in the Show Me State. Republicans have cycled through several candidates but will settle on one after the August 7th primary.

Montana: Montana is another conservative-leaning state that has benefitted recently from strong Democratic leadership. Popular Democratic incumbent Brian Schweitzer is term-limited, but Attorney General Steve Bullock has stepped up to fill those large shoes. The Republican frontrunner is Rep. Rick Hill.

New Hampshire: The perennial battleground state of New Hampshire will have a competitive governor’s race in 2012. Governor John Lynch will leave the governor’s mansion with sky-high approval ratings and give way to one of several strong Democratic candidates. The latest WMUR poll had the leading Democrat Maggie Hassan beating the leading Republican Ovide Lamontagne 34-29.

North Carolina: The North Carolina governor’s race promises to be one of the most competitive in the country, with would-be successors to Governor Bev Perdue competing in a primary on May 8. On the Republican side, former Charlotte Mayor and failed candidate for governor Pat McCrory has tied himself to the Republican legislature’s unpopular agenda of deep cuts to public education. We’ll be watching this one closely.

North Dakota: Senate Minority Leader Ryan Taylor has an uphill battle against incumbent Republican Governor Jack Dalrymple in dark-red North Dakota, but Taylor—a fourth-generation rancher and businessman—wears his underdog status well. Keep an eye on this one.

Utah: Retired Two-Star General Peter Cooke will face off against Republican Governor Gary Herbert in the Beehive State. Cooke has an impressive resume that includes 39 years in the U.S. Army Reserve and 29 years in business and as a real estate developer.

Vermont: Governor Peter Shumlin has earned a reputation as one of the most effective governors in the country, passing landmark universal health care legislation among other accomplishments. Shumlin will face the winner of the August 23rd Republican primary.

Washington: The State of Washington will have one of the most competitive governor’s races in the country in 2012. Rep. Jay Inslee literally wrote the book on green energy jobs, a message that is likely to play well in the Evergreen State. Inslee will face Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna, who has lately come under fire for supporting a Republican budget that slashes education funding. The latest polling has this race as a toss-up.

West Virginia: Governor Earl Ray Tomblin is set to faceoff in a rematch against Bill Maloney. Since defeating Maloney in a special election in 2011, Tomblin has shown leadership in the governor’s mansion, keeping his promise to cut the food tax and passing environmentally-safe drilling regulations for Marcellus Shale that will create thousands of jobs in West Virginia.

Thanks for your support of Democratic governors.

    Jobs. Opportunity. Now.,

    Rep. Jay Inslee

    Rep. Jay Inslee

What's At Stake: Rep. Jay Inslee is running to fill Gov. Christine Gregoire's seat after 2 terms.

Jay Inslee is a fifth-generation Washingtonian whose connection to our state and its people has inspired his enthusiasm, vision and determination to help move Washington forward.

Throughout his life Jay has had many jobs, and he has developed a profound respect for all work and all types of workers. Jay has driven cement trucks, operated jackhammers, and washed dishes. He has prosecuted cases in Everett, driven bulldozers in Bellevue, taught community college classes in Yakima, represented Hanford workers in the Tri Cities, painted houses in Burien, and practiced law in Tacoma.

Jay was taught the value of hard work and an appreciation of Washington’s natural beauty by his mother, Adele, and his father, Frank. Jay’s dad was a biology teacher at Garfield High School and Jay’s mom, a homemaker and artist, worked at Sears and Roebuck — which is now Starbucks’ headquarters.

Jay met his wife, Trudi, while at Ingraham High School. They went on to join in marriage as a Husky and a Cougar, and have been married for 39 years. Together they raised three boys in the sage brush and orchards of the Yakima Valley, where Jay practiced law and served as a small town prosecutor. Jay and Trudi are now the proud grandparents of their two-year-old grandson, Brody.

Jay and Trudi first got involved in politics when their local school district in Selah was considering double-shifting its kids to make room for new students. Knowing this was not a viable long-term solution, Jay and Trudi worked with the community to successfully help get a new school built. Jay ultimately went on to serve as a State Representative from Yakima, and has had the unique privilege of representing both Eastern and Western Washington in the United States Congress.

In Congress, Jay has worked passionately to open up trade opportunities for Washington apples, and helped pass the Yakima River Basin Enhancement Act to secure more water for farmers and fish. In addition, he’s become a national leader on creating new jobs in the clean energy economy, a topic on which he wrote a book called, “Apollo’s Fire.”

Jay has also earned a reputation for often bucking both conventional wisdom and his own party. For example, he argued against bailing out the people responsible for creating the economic crisis, and he ultimately voted against the Wall Street bailout bill in October of 2008. Additionally, from the beginning, Jay has proudly stood up against the war in Iraq.

As Governor, Jay’s priority will be to create jobs in Washington and to expand economic opportunities in manufacturing, clean energy, high tech, biotech, agriculture and aerospace.

Jay plans to help build a thriving, innovative economy that will form a lasting prosperity in communities around the state, from Sunnyside to Sequim, from Pullman to Port Angeles. He will help create an educational foundation and an infrastructure system that will each serve as an engine of job creation, while also protecting the quality of life that makes Washington one of the most wonderful places on earth.

As Governor, Jay Inslee will help build a working Washington.

This election is about our children’s futures, and Walter Dalton understands that providing our kids with a good education now means better opportunities for good jobs later – while Pat McCrory championed the disastrous Republican budget that cuts education funding, leading to increases in classroom sizes and fewer teachers on the job.

    Gov. Peter Shumlin

What's At Stake: Peter has made a career of advocating for policies that reflect the needs and values of Vermonters.

    SUMMARY:

Governor Peter Shumlin was elected on November 2, 2010.

Date of Birth: March 24, 1956

Previous Office: Senate President Pro Tempore

Percent of Vote Won in Previous Election: 49.6%

    ABOUT PETER:

Peter is currently serving his first term as Governor of Vermont.  His career in public service began in Putney almost 30 years ago. In 1980 at the age of 24 he was elected to serve on the town’s select board.

In 1990 Montpelier came calling when Governor Madeleine Kunin appointed Peter to fill an empty seat in the Vermont House of Representatives. The next year he was elected in his own right.

Peter enjoyed representing his hometown, but he felt he had more to contribute. So after 3 years in the House he ran for one of Windham County’s two Senate seats. He was elected in 1992 and would represent Windham County for the next 10 years.
It wouldn’t be long before Peter assumed a leadership role. During his second term he was elected Democratic leader and in 1997 his colleagues chose him to serve as the President pro-tempore, the chamber’s top leadership post.

Peter ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2002. After a 4 year absence he returned to the Senate in 2006 where he was again selected to serve as the President pro-tempore.

During his 13 years in the Senate Peter served on the Rules Committee, the Finance Committee, the Transportation Committee and the Appropriations Committee.

    Accomplishments:

Peter has made a career of advocating for policies that reflect the needs and values of Vermonters – ones that will benefit Vermont in the long term and give future generations the same opportunity that he had to make Vermont their home.

He has worked to fight global climate change, bring broadband to every corner of the state and provide health care for every Vermonter.

He worked with Governor Dean to balance the state budget. During the current economic crisis he stood up to the Douglas administration, working alongside Speaker Shap Smith to pass responsible legislation that trimmed programs where possible, while reinvesting in programs and services that Vermonters need now more than ever.

And believing that all Vermonters deserve to be treated equally, he played a leading role in the passage of the first in the nation civil unions law and this year’s Marriage Equality Act.

John Gregg is running for Governor to chart a new and more prosperous course for our state by promoting a renewed spirit of bipartisanship and focusing on our shared commitment to good-paying jobs, quality education and a state that works for working Hoosiers.

John is a lifelong Hoosier who was born and still lives in the town of Sandborn in Southwest Indiana. His devotion to business and public service began at an early age. At 15, John purchased a local soda shoppe in his hometown, and not long after he became a local committee precinct person. In 1986 he decided to run for the Indiana House of Representatives. Four years later, he became the House Majority Leader, and in 1996, with the House evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans for the first time in Indiana history, John became Speaker.

Despite the political split, John was able to facilitate compromise on a number of critical issues, including reforms in education, campaign finance, property tax, lobbying and ethics. John advocated open and accessible government that always put Hoosiers first.

During his six-year tenure as Speaker, Indiana had record budget surpluses and one of its lowest unemployment rates in history. Taxes were cut, and job growth soared.

When he retired in 2002, John’s colleagues honored him for restoring civility and congeniality to the legislative process, and Governing magazine named him its “Public Official of the Year.”

After leaving office, John served for two years as interim President of Vincennes University and then resumed his private law practice. He also hosted a popular radio show that enjoyed syndication across the state.

John’s career has been guided not by his professional success or ambition, but by those closest to him: his sons John and Hunter are the two most important reasons he is running to become our next Governor.

With a united focus under John’s leadership, Indiana will turn around its record of job losses and high unemployment. With experience in both the private sector and public service, John is committed to getting our state back on track and back to work.

John lives in Sandborn with his 2 sons and their dog Mr. Klauss.

    Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin

What's At Stake: Gov. Tomblin is a consensus-maker, a bridge-builder, a leader who has brought business and labor, Republicans and Democrats, urban and rural interests together to move West Virginia forward.

School teacher, businessman, entrepreneur, public servant, Governor; the journey from living upstairs at the family restaurant in Chapmanville, West Virginia, to running state government is an American success story. Born March 15, 1952 to Earl and Freda Tomblin, Earl Ray Tomblin grew up in a hardworking coal town next to the railroad tracks above his parents’ restaurant. Nothing was ever given to him, and he wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Growing up, Earl Ray sold eggs and rabbits, bussed tables, and mowed lawns. He went to WVU, and was elected the youngest member of the State House of Delegates. He bought a local restaurant, worked nights until closing, helped on the family farm in the morning and spent days as a legislator for Logan County.

No wonder Earl Ray understands the importance of good paying jobs and encouraging private sector growth. That’s what his whole life has been about.

As a public servant he has made government a partner with the private sector to attract new jobs and industry to West Virginia.  As Governor, creating jobs is his top priority.  “I will go anywhere, do anything and leave no stone unturned to bring jobs to West Virginia.”

In his thirty-six years in the legislature, he has chaired the Senate Finance Committee, was elected 18 straight years as President of the Senate, and with the election of Governor Joe Manchin to the US Senate, is now acting as Governor.

Earl Ray is credited with saving taxpayers millions by revising the state pension system and privatizing workers’ compensation, stabilizing state finances by establishing West Virginia’s rainy day fund, reforming the state’s medical system, keeping doctors in this state, and fighting to reduce the state’s food tax.

As Governor, Tomblin cut the food tax (with the goal of completely eliminating it) and vetoed increases in DMV fees that would have cost West Virginians millions.

Earl Ray Tomblin is a consensus-maker, a bridge-builder, a leader who has brought business and labor, Republicans and Democrats, urban and rural interests together to move West Virginia forward. Governor Tomblin believes “we have to stop playing partisan games, set aside personal ambition and put West Virginia first.”

Earl Ray Tomblin has been married to Joanne Tomblin for 31 years.  They have one son, Brent, who will be attending Marshall University this fall.  Earl Ray is running in the general election on October 4th for the unexpired term for Governor of West Virginia.

Enough is enough. The time to recall and replace Scott Walker is now. Tom Barrett will get Wisconsin working again and put an end to the ideological brinksmanship of the past year.

On June 5, Wisconsinites will finally have the opportunity to make clear that Walker isn’t working.

Under Scott Walker, Wisconsin ranked dead last in job creation for 2011. Instead of focusing on the economy, Scott Walker repealed the Equal Pay Act to undermine the economic security of women and their families and proceeded to wage ideological battles that do nothing to create jobs.

The Democratic Governors Association is closely involved in the recall effort–we’ve already contributed $2 million, more than our organization has ever spent on a Wisconsin gubernatorial election.

There are many ways that you will be able to help. You can sign up to volunteer your time, make a donation and attend recall events in your area.

    Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (WV)

    Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (WV)
Gov.

    Gov. John Kitzhaber (OR)

    Gov. John Kitzhaber (OR)
Governor Kitzhaber is working together to create a better future for Oregon.

I was born in Colfax, Washington, on March 5, 1947. I moved with my family to Oregon at age 11, and graduated from South Eugene High School in 1965. After earning my Bachelor’s degree at Dartmouth College, I returned to Oregon to study medicine at the University of Oregon Medical School (now OHSU). Upon becoming a doctor, I practiced emergency room medicine in Roseburg, Oregon, from 1974 to 1988.

My interest in health care public policy, together with a deep concern for the livelihoods of rural Oregonians and a deep love for Oregon’s natural heritage, compelled me to seek public service. I was elected to the Oregon Legislature in 1978, and served a term in the Oregon House of Representatives. In 1980, I was elected to the Oregon State Senate, and served three terms, leading to my election as Senate President in 1985, a post I held until 1993.

We had many accomplishments in the Legislature, but my most memorable achievement was bringing lawmakers and interest groups together to enact the ground-breaking Oregon Health Plan. Tens of thousands of low and moderate-income Oregon families and their children still have access to health care because of this work.

In 1994, and again in 1998, I was honored to be elected as Governor of Oregon. As Governor, I presided over eight years of significant economic growth, and was proud to have pioneering the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds, a collaborative effort that brought together government and private landowners to protect clean water and native salmon runs. During that time, we launched the Oregon Business Plan, a bipartisan strategic framework developed collaboratively among business leaders, community leaders and elected officials. Until this time, Oregon had lacked a comprehensive plan to create jobs and grow its economy.

After two terms, I continued to work to improve access to cost-effective health care, advocating for significant health care reform. Concerned about the impact of the fiscal crisis on Oregonians, and seeing the opportunity through that crisis to create true systemic change, I decided to run for Governor again in 2010. I am currently serving my third term as Oregon’s Governor.

Gov. Hickenlooper is a former geologist, brewer-turned-mayor and now governor.

A geologist-turned brewpub pioneer who had never run for political office (not even student council) before running for Denver Mayor in 2003, John Hickenlooper was elected Governor of Colorado on Nov. 2, 2010. He took office on Jan. 11, 2011.

Born in Narberth, Pa., John saw his father die at a young age and was raised by his notoriously frugal mother. Having lived through the Great Depression, John’s mother never wore a dress she didn’t sew herself, and she washed plastic wrap and aluminum foil for reuse.

    Gov. Andrew Cuomo (NY)

    Gov. Andrew Cuomo (NY)
Throughout his life, Andrew Cuomo has been a forceful voice for change in New York.

Andrew M. Cuomo, elected the 56th Governor of New York State on November 2, 2010, has a lifelong commitment to public service and the proven leadership skills to make government work for the people of the state.

Prior to his election as Governor, Andrew Cuomo served four years as New York’s Attorney General. As the state’s top legal officer, he made restoring public trust in government and protecting New York taxpayers the top priorities of his administration.

As Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo brought national reform to the student loan industry, uncovered fraud within the largest health insurers in the country, protected investors from abuses on Wall Street, and made the Internet safer for children nationwide. His groundbreaking investigations into the state pension system ended decades of government corruption in New York and set a model for public pension funds across the country.

Governor Cuomo has a long record of fighting for justice and championing government reform.

In 1997, Cuomo was appointed by President Clinton to serve as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Under his leadership, HUD was transformed from a bureaucratic backwater rife with waste, fraud, and abuse to a revitalized engine for economic development and unprecedented housing opportunities. Cuomo brought dramatic reforms to make government efficient and competent while saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

Andrew Cuomo’s work earned HUD the prestigious “Innovations in American Government Award” from the Ford Foundation and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University on three different occasions.

As secretary, Cuomo made fighting racial discrimination a key focus and brought 2,000 anti-discrimination cases all across the country.

In addition, Cuomo established Housing Enterprise for Less Privileged (HELP) in 1986, which became the nation’s largest private provider of transitional housing for the homeless. Based on his pioneering work through HELP, Cuomo was appointed by New York City Mayor David Dinkins in 1991 to lead the New York City Commission on the Homeless.

Cuomo first practiced law as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan. He has also worked as a partner in a New York City law firm and was of counsel at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson.

Cuomo graduated from Fordham University in 1979 and Albany Law School in 1982.

He is the father of three girls, twins Mariah and Cara and his youngest Michaela.
